Press freedom is one of the cornerstones of democracy. What is it that makes the press free? What kind of struggles have to be won every day? How can quality media combat hate speech and increase understanding? These are some of the questions that we try to tackle with this blog.

Finland has been one of the leaders in the international Press Freedom Index for decades. During 2017, this blog looks at Finland’s journey in becoming one of the most free countries for the press in the world. How was it done? What might other countries learn from Finland’s experiences? What should still be done to keep us among the leaders in press freedom?

This blog in published by The Finnish Foundation for Media and Development (known by its Finnish acronym 'Vikes'). The blog is part of the programme on the centenary of Finland’s independence.
